RO Reduces Beneficial and Undesirable Ions Together
A membrane does not decide whether a dissolved ion is nutritionally desirable. It may reduce sodium, nitrate or excessive salinity while also reducing calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate. The final mineral content depends on the incoming water, membrane rejection, blending and any remineralisation stage. 'RO water has zero minerals' is therefore not always accurate, but substantial mineral reduction is a normal technical consequence.
Does Mineral Removal Make RO Water Unsafe?
Not automatically. If source water contains an important hazard, effective treatment is the priority. The correct question is whether RO was necessary, whether it was designed for the source, whether it is maintained, whether post-treatment and storage are hygienic and whether the finished water meets applicable quality requirements. WHO guidance focuses on risk management across the system, not on treating one technology as a universal guarantee or threat.
Remineralisation vs. True Origin

Some systems use calcite, magnesium media, blending or other processes to improve taste, alkalinity and stability.
