Introduction

Plastic packaging is often discussed in absolutes: either completely safe or inherently dangerous. The evidence supports a more practical view. Food-contact suitability, regulatory compliance, manufacturing quality, intended use, temperature, sunlight, container condition and hygiene all matter.

Food-Grade is a Standard, Not a Visual Impression

A container intended for drinking water should be made from an authorised food-contact material and produced under suitable conditions. It should not transfer substances to food or water above applicable limits under its intended conditions of use. Consumers cannot verify resin chemistry by looking at a bottle, which is why compliant sourcing, traceability and testing matter.

PET, Polycarbonate, and Reusable Jars are Not Identical

  • Single-use PET bottles, reusable polycarbonate jars and other approved polymers have different properties and use patterns.

  • A claim about one material should not be automatically applied to another.

  • The manufacturer should identify the material and the intended reuse and cleaning protocol.

  • For large returnable jars, repeated washing, inspection and rejection of damaged containers are central controls.

What 'BPA-Free' Does and Does Not Mean

BPA is a chemical historically associated with certain polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. 'BPA-free' addresses one substance; it does not mean the container is chemical-free or exempt from food-contact requirements. FSSAI has continued to update packaging rules and has considered provisions relating to BPA and PFAS in food-contact materials. Website language should therefore remain precise and current.

Heat and Sunlight are Avoidable Stressors

  • Water should not be stored for long periods in direct sunlight, near chemicals or in hot vehicles.

  • Heat and ultraviolet exposure can affect packaging, accelerate ageing and alter taste.

  • Even when a container complies under intended conditions, abusive storage is unnecessary and avoidable.

Reuse and Dispenser Systems

  • Reuse requires the right container: A single-use bottle is not designed to become a permanent household flask. Repeated handling can create scratches and difficult-to-clean surfaces, and hygiene may become a larger practical issue than polymer migration. Use a durable reusable bottle designed for repeated use, wash it properly and allow it to dry.

  • Large jars and dispensers create a system: A sealed 20-litre jar can be contaminated after opening if the dispenser probe, tap, reservoir or surrounding surface is dirty. Users should wash hands before changing jars, avoid touching the neck and probe, clean the dispenser according to the manufacturer's procedure and keep the area free of dust and pests.

Microplastics: Concern Without Exaggeration

WHO has reviewed microplastics in drinking water and broader dietary and inhalation exposure. The organisation has identified important knowledge gaps and called for better research and reduction of plastic pollution. Current evidence does not justify claiming that every plastic bottle creates a proven specific disease risk, but it does justify better material control, waste reduction, responsible storage and continued research.

What Consumers Should Inspect

  • Check the tamper-evident seal, manufacturing and batch details, container clarity and condition, cap fit, odour, storage environment and supplier traceability.

  • Reject cracked, deeply scratched, cloudy, leaking or poorly sealed returnable jars.

  • Do not accept stock stored in direct sun or beside fuels, pesticides or cleaning chemicals.

  • Myth: All plastic bottles release dangerous chemicals immediately.
    Fact: Food-contact risk depends on material, compliance, conditions of use, age and storage.

  • Myth: BPA-free means completely risk-free.
    Fact: It addresses one chemical; overall material and process compliance still matter.

  • Myth: The sealed jar is the only hygiene concern.
    Fact: The dispenser and handling after opening can also affect water quality.
